Community Leaders and Volunteers across Co. Tyrone grabbed their walking shoes and participated in a Community Walk Leader training day in Gortin Forest, Wednesday 24th September 2014!

Eager walkers joined forces to learn about the skills needed to run an active walking group in their local community. The training day consisted of map reading and navigation skills, route planning, group management as well as dealing with emergency situations. Overall the day aimed to equip leaders with the skills to lead short safe and accessible walks with people of all ages and abilities in their local area.

Newly qualified Community Walk Leader Graham McCormick, a Volunteer Ranger from Outdoor Recreation commented “I will be able to lead groups with more confidence. The physical walk was very useful in pointing out the risks that I would normally not consider when walking by myself. It was an excellent course all round.”

Janet Harper, Youth Worker at Catlederg Youth Forum also added “It was an excellent, informative and enjoyable day. I can’t wait to take out our first group.”
