CWLs Navigate to Success at Tollymore

Community Walk Leaders spruced up on their map reading skills after attending WIYCs Further Navigation Training day at Tollymore National Outdoor Centre, Saturday 22nd November 2014.

This small group of accomplished Community Walk Leaders travelled to this iconic location to enhance their map reading and navigation skills over the backdrop of the Mournes.

During the day Community Walk Leaders looked into map reading, compass work, contours, timing and pacing, route planning and dealing with emergency incidents.

Walking In Your Community's Training and Development Officer, Richard Gawith commented "This was our first ever Further Navigation course, and the feedback from the Community Walk Leaders was brilliant. We tailored the course to suit the leaders that came along, focusing on what they wanted to learn. A great day was had exploring the furthest reaches of Tollymore forest park, while learning about everything from pacing and timing to moving injured people safely. We now have a great model to build on, and I look forward to running more of these courses for other walk leaders across NI."
