Get Your Walking Boots on for the Mourne International Walking Festival

We live in an area of outstanding natural beauty but how many of us have ever walked in the Mourne Mountains?

That’s the question being posed to local people by the organisers of this year's Mourne Walking Festival - 28th –30th June 2013.

Based in Warrenpoint this year, the festival traditionally attracts walkers from all over the world and for 2013 the organisers would like to see international visitors joined by local people from Newry, Warrenpoint, Rostrevor, Kilkeel, Newcastle, Downpatrick and surrounding areas.

Michelle McKeown explains: “This is one of Ireland’s leading tourism products but the festival highlights the beauty of the region that many local people have yet to experience. The area is also steeped in history with a wealth of heritage and a whole host of myths and legends.

“There are a range of both guided and self-guided walks to suit various levels of fitness and experience so that families, strollers and serious walkers alike can take part*.  The lowland routes are pre-marked allowing you to walk at your own pace and are perfect for those wishing to take kids along, with control points with refreshments at intervals along the route.”

There are ten guided walks over the weekend of the walking festival, from a 10km guided track walks around Warrenpoint and Burren to the moderate 20km Mountain Ramble around Leitrim lodge, Rocky Mountain, Pierces Castle, Yellow Water River and the Fairy Glen.

Pre booking is already open and by doing this you can save money, alternatively you can register on the morning of the walks.

You can revive tried feet with music at the annual blister ball which is held this year in the Duke Restaurant, Warrenpoint.

With more and more emphasis nowadays on how important it is to keep fit and healthy, what better way to do it than to go for a walk and, at the same time, find out about your local area?

Full details of the walks are on the website or contact Warrenpoint Tourist Office - tel 028 4175 2256 or email: for more details on registration.
