Walking In Your Community in conjunction with Belfast Hills Partnership held a Community Walk Leader support course, Saturday 18th January 2014 at Colin Glen Forest Park.

Walking In Your Community and Belfast Hills Partnership worked together to arrange this event in order to offer support to current Community Walk Leaders qualified under the scheme. This full day event was an informal yet informative day that enabled Community Walk Leaders to learn more about the programme following their initial training.

Fundamental information about how to set up and run a community walking group was relayed to the leaders reinforcing what they had already learnt from the Community Walk Leader training course. A short introduction into social media and how to utilise online streams, was another integral element of the support event as it educated leaders how to promote events online and run walks within their local community. This acted as a means of encouragement to current Community Walk Leaders and provided them with the confidence and knowledge to start up a community walking group.

Nicola Cully, Marketing Officer from Walking In Your Community remarked “The Colin Glen Community Walk Leader support event was a fantastic lifeline for current Community Walk Leaders. It has given them the opportunity to meet other leaders within their local area and build vital links with one another, share walking ideas and set up joint walks under the scheme.

The Community Walk Leader Support event incorporated an interactive session for creating inspiring walks. Community Walk Leaders were introduced to various games and ideas that would enable them to have the ability to make their walks more interesting and engaging for their community group.

When speaking about the event Richard Gawith, Training and Development Officer at Walking In Your Community commented “This event was mainly about confidence-building and everyone left with a clear plan of how they will set up their walking group. Additionally, the craic had in the afternoon workshop will surely inspire these Community Walk Leaders to get going.”

Over the course of the year, Walking In Your Community plan to run further support events exclusive to Community Walk Leaders. Events of this kind are significantly beneficial to Community Walk Leaders as they offer invaluable support, advice and encouragement.
